RPL for Australian qualifications

Turn your years on the job into an Australian qualification.

If you've worked as a chef, baker, hairdresser, carpenter or in any skilled trade, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets you get a Cert III or IV without going back to study.

What is RPL

You already know the trade. Get the paper.

Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal process where Australian Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) assess your existing skills, work experience and on-the-job knowledge against the units of a nationally accredited qualification.

If your evidence stacks up, you walk away with a Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma, the same qualification you'd get studying full-time, but without spending a year in a classroom.

Why bother?

  • Required for 482 visa sponsorship in many trades
  • Boosts your migration points for skilled visas
  • Recognised by Australian employers
  • Faster than studying, typically 4 to 12 weeks
  • No exams, just evidence of what you already do

Common Questions

RPL, answered.

How long does RPL take?
For most trade qualifications, expect 4 to 12 weeks from the time you submit your evidence. Faster if your portfolio is well-organised, slower if the assessor needs to request more information. We help you get it right the first time.
How much does it cost?
RPL fees vary by qualification and the partnered RTO, typically between $1,500 and $4,000 for trade certificates. We'll quote you an exact fee before you commit, and there's no charge for the eligibility check or our coordination.
What evidence do I need?
A mix of work history (CV, references, payslips), demonstrations (photos and short videos of your work), supporting documents (existing trade certificates, training records) and a competency conversation. We send you a checklist tailored to your trade.
Can I do RPL while still overseas?
Yes. Most assessment is done remotely. Photos, videos and reference checks all happen by email. The competency conversation is over video. You only need to be in Australia later if your visa pathway requires it.
Will my qualification be recognised for 482 visa sponsorship?
Yes, when your trade is on the relevant occupation list and the qualification matches the ANZSCO requirements. We only recommend RPL pathways that lead to visa-eligible qualifications.
What if I don't pass the assessment?
If gaps are identified, you have options. Sometimes a small amount of gap training closes them. Other times you can submit additional evidence. The assessor explains any shortfall, and we help you decide the next step.
